How to Train Your Dog to Enjoy Life with You

CGA member and ambassador Mike Clingan has trained his dog, Crosby, to be an epic retriever not only in the field but also on all their adventures together. Their dedication to training—and Mike's incredible photography skills—has made Crosby the star of many magazine covers.

For Mike, photography is more than a job—it's a passion. And it's even more special because his best friend, Crosby, gets to be a part of it. Imagine the adventures (or even the everyday moments) you'd like to share with your dog. Unfortunately, many people find themselves leaving their dogs at home, missing out on adventures, even when their pups started with so much potential. But that doesn't have to be you!

Here are some tips on how to train your dog to be a part of your life:

1. Follow a Consistent Plan

With so much information out there on dog training, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Some of it is excellent, while some can be misleading. Even two pieces of good advice from different training systems can conflict and cause confusion. Don’t let the vast world of YouTube videos, information overload, or misinformation keep you from training your dog to reach its full potential. Find a consistent, proven plan and stick to it.

2. Join an Encouraging Community

The internet can be a harsh place, especially in some waterfowl groups where it seems like everyone is more interested in proving others wrong than helping. At CGA, we’ve created a positive, supportive community focused on helping each other succeed. Being part of a group that builds you up, helps you troubleshoot, and celebrates your successes is crucial for maintaining your motivation and making progress.

3. Don’t Give Up

Training a dog takes time and patience. Keep moving forward, building on the small wins you achieve each day. Show up for your dog again and again. By consistently training the dog in front of you, you’ll help your dog reach its full potential. Remember, persistence is key.

4. Socialize, Socialize, Socialize

If you want your dog to join you on adventures, early and frequent socialization is vital. Expose your pup to positive and fun experiences in different environments, around various people, and with other dogs. Make sure these experiences are safe and appropriate for your dog’s age and vaccination status, so always check with your vet to understand what’s safe.

Mike Clingan says it best:

“CGA has been integral to Crosby’s success and my success. Without it, I wouldn’t have a dog that could go places and do the things he gets to do. Crosby loves to work, lives to work, and I love working with him. The foundations that CGA sets in the program are crucial for having both a wonderful pet and a great hunting retriever.”
