The Story of CGA

Little did I know when I bought our first Lab that it would lead to the birth of Cornerstone GunDog Academy. We decided to hire a local trainer to work with our new dog for a few months and while i’m sure he did his best, it just didn’t work out the way we planned. 

Unfortunately, over 2 years and $7,500 into the process, we realized he would make a great pet and casual duck dog but just wasn’t what we were looking for and that the time was gone and couldn’t be recovered. We were back to square one. Not exactly a great start to our venture into Duck Dogs.

At that point, we set out to learn everything possible about training Labrador Retrievers as Hunting Companions and we wanted them to make great Family Companions as well. I bought just about every training DVD available as well as several books from those that were successful in the field both in British as well as American-style training. Josh had a way with dogs. However, he didn’t particularly enjoy watching the videos on TV, he much preferred being in the field hands on. This was the catalyst that caused me to think about the way others learned to develop their own dog but it was an idea in the incubation stage.

As time went by, I couldn't help thinking about how Barton had helped us over the last few years. So I reached out to him and told him what we were doing with the goal of inviting him to teach on some of our videos. That day was the beginning of our collaboration on this project. We set out together to help others learn how to train their own dog. As we began to merge our plans, I think we all realized that through Cornerstone Gundog Academy we were about to change the way others learned to develop their gun dog.

When I think about the possibilities, I can see the quality and experience of owning a gundog will be greatly enhanced for those that become a part of what we are doing with Cornerstone Gundog Academy.
